In the beginning there was the system
Just one for a whole bunch of people... no, really...
And there were those who managed the system
Maintained its code, cared for the hardware
Some were paid
Others merely did it out of curiousity or enlightened self interest
...
And then came the PC and there was one on every desk
And the managers and users cried that it was
A Good Thing
And more geeks got paid
And the bar industry was happy
Then... one day... the managers and user lost sight of something
There were first whispers
Then grumblings...
You get the idea.
Somewhere along the way, personal computers and certain widespread commercial software applications, and some not so widespread ones, became the tools of the job for a big chunk of the workforce.
And then, well, then things got interesting.
Someone somewhere decided that because they were working with a computer, that they didn't actually have to know how to use it.
The software should do that for you, right?
