It's a small thing... But, man does it bug me...

We've all seen the (numerous) best practice docs on long, complex passwords being the hardest to crack (if you're using brute force and a password hashing methodology that doesn't have a Rainbow Table available for it, that is) and how, logically, a passphrase (like a sentence, complete with punctuation and spaces) makes for a very good, complex, long password with the bonus that it is more memorable (for normal humans) than the 13375p3@|<>

So, I was resetting my LiveID this AM, and being a good user was dropping in a passphrase instead of a password.

Examine the image, particularly the text circled in red.

Can you fathom advocating passphrases as a good idea, and then NOT SUPPORTING them in one of the larger online identity schemes out there?

I'm not a big country music fan. Ask my girlfriend, she'll confirm this.
That's kind of odd, considering I'll do tend to dip into a lot of different genres (yes, even after they cease to be fashionable).
Might have something to do with the fact that my parents listened to nothing but country when I was a kid. Everyone's gotta rebel against something, right?

Anyway... Having said that, I will say that if you are in Toronto on the 19th of September you should hie your ass down to the Rivoli for 9:45 and check out Alana Kurtis and the Tumblers.
I've seen them a couple of times now and it ain't your father's country music.

Hmmm, on second thought, maybe it is. Maybe that's why I'm enjoying it.

It is certainly a hell of a lot more country than the thinly disguised pop that has been packaged as country for the last 15 years.
Alana has a hell of a voice and an excellent lyrical pen,and her band the Tumblers are definitely not skill-deficient. Come out on Wednesday and give it a listen.

Short rant on Large Orgs

I've been buried inside the bowels of one of the country's larger financial players, working with management solutions.
I have never been a big fan of the large organizations; I have always maintained that there were too many layers of bullshit, petty empire-building and people being assigned to roles, not because they had any aptitude or interest in it, but because they had been there so long.
I've worked at government clients in both Canada and the US, and the madness, bureaucracy and waste in those environments has nothing on what happens in a large, profitable FI.

I am glad I spent almost a decade in a variety industries working for small and medium businesses. I learned a lot doing that.
In a large environment like this, I think I would have lost more than I would have learned.

I never did like SUVs. Not even the "compact" ones.
A few short days ago, I was riding to the client site (the joys of a gig in town - the bike commute becomes an option) heading south on Dovercourt.

The light at College St. was red; I waited next to a Honda CRV (or some similar vehicle - my memory for reasons that will shortly become clear is a little jumbled on some details), I made eye contact with the driver. The turns green, we both set off, the Honda getting ahead of me on the descent, then signalling a turn to the right, presumably to park curbside as there is no street to turn onto.
So far so good, I'll just make sure I get on the left of this vehicle and all will be fine.
I'm about 3 metres uphill and closing when it happens.
There is no warning, no signal.
The Honda, still with the turn signal lit does an abrupt 90 degree turn to the left. I'm looking into the broadside of this vehicle.
I'm anticipating pain and am suddenly very appreciative of my helmet.
With about 2 metres to go I start pulling my handlebars to the right while braking hard.
Next thing I know, I'm not smacking into the Honda, nor am I hitting the curb.
I'm heading uphill coming out of the dip. My tailbone is riding the tip of my seat. Not too comfortable, but it beats the shit out of riding the top tube. And it is orders of magnitude less shitty than being broadsided by a steel box.
By the time I get to Dundas I have my shit together.
A cyclist riding behind me has seen the whole thing go down, and expresses her disgust with the driver involved.
Feeling vindicated, I gingerly make my way to work.

As for the driver, you fucking dipshit oblivious cunt, your carelessness could have fucked me right up. You saw me beside you, you should have seen me coming in your rearview. I was lucky I managed to swerve the fuck out of your way.
You were lucky I wasn't another car.

Well, I didn't have sangria in the park, but had I known it was going to be as gorgeous a day here in Toronto as it was, I would likely have made some for the road...

Took the waterfront trail out to Cherry Beach (sidebar here - I was not impressed with the detour on the trail that took me onto Lakeshore Road underneath the Gardner up to the Don Roadway; I didn't jump onto the trail to play in traffic with semis... what the fuck are you supposed to do if you're on rollerblades down there?) and then along Commissioners to Ashbridge's Bay.

Not the most flattering view of the city, but a fun one to get to on a single speed ;).

After cruising out to Kew Gardens, I headed north up Glen Manor to Queen East. Once there, I found a bustling Beaches neighbourhood and a long, narrow corridor between traffic and parked cars. I got on the hoods and sped up.
My tour north up to Dundas was nothing to remark on - nor was the run over to Jarvis.
Jarvis was busy but manageable. Mount Pleasant I found to be a misnomer after a point.
Did you know Summerhill doesn't cross the subway lines? I found that out.
Mount Pleasant was much more pleasant to deal with between Inglewood and St. Clair East.

So yeah, I have a sunburn (from yesterday's yard work at the "in-laws", made worse by today's excursion), my legs aren't sore yet but may be in the morning... and I don't care.

Now, if you'll excuse me I need to go find a beer as I have no sangria handy...

Microsoft's $3 Plan for Education (everywhere)

There has been some coverage of this in the last couple of days.
I think Joe Wilcox from ZDNet's Microsoft Watch made a very good point in this blog post:

Microsoft will start offering the $3 suite [which includes Windows XP Starter Edition, not Vista Starter Edition -G.C.] to governments in the second half of 2007, which indicates how the company really sees the future state of Vista hardware support. Actions speak louder than marketing messaging.

Yes, even as I write this up on my work laptop running Vista Business (and we're a Gold Partner... where's the Enterprise love for the channel this time around?) and I think of the nightmares several of my colleagues have had trying to get Vista x64 to, well, work without optical drives disappearing randomly and my own issues of trying to find a working virtual CD/DVD drive in January... Shudder.

My own selfish reasons for not liking the message this program sends now dealt with, let's take the long view of what this project really means:

1. Linux and other F/OSS projects have a strong presence in the developing world, Microsoft does not.
2. Given 1, Microsoft's future market dominance is, at best, doubtful as information-based economies outside of Europe and North America begin to flourish and begin to rapidly grow infrastructure - an infrastructure not based on MS products, not on the server side, not on the desktop side, not on the mobile side.
3. Given 2, the future is not that bright for Microsoft - unless something changes.
4. Given 3, Microsoft, in order to grab a bigger piece of developing markets, had best start getting software in front of the upcoming generation at a (relatively) affordable rate before initiatives like One Laptop Per Child introduce the world's largest potential markets to F/OSS operating on a large scale.

So, is this altruism or indoctrination of potential consumers in the guise of an educational quick start?
Let me think about that...

First, the good news: my girlfriend and I recently got new rides: a mountain bike for her and a single speed/fixed gear (flip flop hub on the rear wheel for me).

Ain't it purty? I like it.

And the bad news - we are in exile. There is something in the air in the apartment that is simply doing us in. We got home on Monday and it went right for the eyes; we bailed and have been squatting at her sister's ever since.
Went back to the place tonight after the landlords replaced the ceiling tile in the bathroom and gave the common areas a polish - still the same crap going on. First the eye irritation, then nauseau, then reactions on the skin, then general itchiness.

This is pissing me right the fuck off. I think I am going to be living somewhere else at the end of the month.

Well, fair enough; still living somewhere else now, but living in a different somewhere where I have a lease and pay rent.

This sucks. Fortunately, I can always ride if I want to blow off steam.

Rock.

Uh... what else? Hey I abondoned this post for a couple of months and totally forgot about it.

response to demands by a British recording industry association to
disclose information about 17 subscribers alleged to have been
violating copyright.

Suspension and Disclosure of Customer Information

Thank you for your letter dated 10 July 2006, notifying us of your
allegations that certain customers of Tiscali UK Limited
("Tiscali") have and continue to infringe the copyright in various
sounds recordings owned or controlled by certain members of The
British Phonographic IndustryLimited ("BPI").

In your letter, you request that Tiscali:

1. suspends the relevant customers until such time as they enter
into an undertaking with the BPI in the form required by you;

2. discloses the personal details of the relevant customers to the
BPI; and

3. itself enters into a legal agreement with the BPI obliging it
to do the above.

I will deal with each of these issues in turn below.

Firstly, however, I would like to be clear that Tiscali does not
support or condone use of its network for abuse or infringement of
copyright. Tiscali has a history of co-operating with those
investigating any such matters, within the limits of its own legal
obligations and whilst respecting the legal rights of our
customers. Moreover, Tiscali has done a great deal of work to
further the development of the legitimate online music community
and has developed and enjoys an excellent working relationship with
most of the major record labels in the UK and many independent
labels, the majority of which are your members.

Suspension

You have sent us a spreadsheet setting out a list of 17 IP
addresses you allege belong to Tiscali customers, whom you allege
have infringed the copyright of your members, together with the
dates and times and with which sound recording you allege that they
have done so. You have also sent us extracts of screenshots of the
shared drive of one of those customers. You state that such
evidence is "overwhelming". However, you have provided no actual
evidence in respect of 16 of the accounts. Further, you have
provided no evidence of downloading taking place nor have you
provided evidence that the shared drive was connected by the
relevant IP address at the relevant time.

Similar requests we have dealt with in the past, have included such
information and, indeed, the bodies conducting those investigations
have felt that a court would consider it necessary to see such
evidence, supported by sworn statements, before being able to grant
any order.

Therefore, in order to assist you, we will require the following
information from you:

1. in respect of the remaining 16 IP addresses, please provide
screenshots of each user's shared drive so that you can prima facie
establish communication to the public;

2. in respect of all 17 IP addresses, please provide evidence that
shows that the user id is connected via the IP address concerned at
the relevant date and time;

3. if you wish to establish that downloading is taking place,
please also provide evidence of this; and

3. as these IP address are dynamic and are allocated to a user
upon connection for the duration of the connection only, please
confirm that the timings provided are all BST, so that we may
accurately identify the customer details.

In the meantime, we have contacted the customer, in respect of whom
you have provided partial evidence of communication to the public
of copyrighted sound recordings and have given such customer seven
days from the date of receipt of our letter to provide an
explanation. Should we not receive an adequate explanation during
such period, we shall suspend the user's account pending resolution
of your investigation, assuming by that time we have received
evidence from you of a link between the user account and the IP
address at the relevant time.

At this point, I would like to make it clear that a similar
procedure will be followed in respect of the remaining 16
customers, once you have provided proper evidence. Tiscali does
not intend to require its customers to enter into the undertakings
proposed by you and, in any event, our initial view is that they
are more restrictive than is reasonable or necessary. However,
should you wish our customers to enter into your undertakings, you
will need to approach them directly. It is a matter for them to
decide whether they wish to enter into such undertakings or defend
proceedings against them in the courts. It is not for Tiscali, as
an ISP, nor the BPI, as a trade association, to effectively act as
a regulator or law enforcement agency and deny individuals the
right to defend themselves against the allegations made against them.

Disclosure of Customer Details

As you will already be fully aware, Tiscali will not be able to
disclose customer details to you unless you obtain a court order
requiring us to do so. To disclose without a court order would put
Tiscali at risk of breaching the terms and conditions of its
customer agreements, and the provisions of the Data Protection Act
1998.

Tiscali Undertakings

As we have mentioned above, Tiscali has always co-operated with
investigations into alleged infringement conducted by copyright
owners, whilst observing its own legal obligations and respecting
the legal rights of its customers. In the circumstances, we do not
consider it necessary nor desirable to enter into such undertakings
nor do we believe that, in circumstances where we are co-operating
with your investigation in the manner we have outlined in this
letter, that a court would require us to do so. Furthermore, we do
not believe that you have at present satisfied the requirements of
section 97A of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 with the
information you have provided.

I was on my way back from Duke's Cycle, where I ordered a new headset (ah yes... the bike will be built) and I noticed that I could hear the Grand Prix down on the Lakeshore.
I was heading north on Euclid, pushing to reach College before the penalty kicks from the World Cup were finished - I could hear the race all the way up.
I reached College, just as Italy nailed their last penalty to take their fourth World Cup title while denying France their second.
As soon as that ball crossed the goal line, I could no longer hear the race. People spilled off of patios and into the streets, flags were waving, chaos ensued.

Going to be a fun evening.

Bah. It's clouding over.
I'm sitting in the study, listening to Gomez' "How We Operate" (its really freakin' good by the way) while I build skeletal PowerPoint decks for three courses.
My mind isn't really on my work.
Feeling a little bitter (though the Gomez is is helping me get past that).
To all those who neglect their correspondence: get bent. Yeah, I'm talking to you... Getting really sick of one-way friendships over here.
Yeah, it's that kind of day - feeling cut off from the world around me.
Nobody's fault but mine I suppose... No, wait... I made the effort. And you? No? Thought not.

So, what's going on in the world... North Korea testing cruise missiles. Lovely.
In Toronto, we have failed as a working city. I have nothing against the Guardian Angels, do what you're going to do; but do we really need what are essentially unaccountable vigilantes watching our streets? As much as people are (and will always be) critical of the police department, at least accountability is built in there.
CBC radio (in Toronto anyway) has a series on solar power, aptly called Solar Revolution. Looks interesting.

World Cup has been good to watch, but painful to accept (3-1 France over Spain... that hurt!).

Saw Gomez at the Guvernment last week. While the Guvernment is not my favourite venue, Gomez puts on one hell of a show. Best time I have had at the Guvernment since I saw Aphex Twin there... crap, NINE years ago?!

OK, now I am feeling old.

So... Net Neutrality. This is a hot button issue with me lately, as it threatens to reshape electronic communication radically.
Yes, I realize that it is a proposed piece of US legislation, not Canadian.
What many people fail to realise is that no nation's network exists in isolation; changes in the US network will have repercussions for all of us.

Bike Week 2006 comes to Toronto...

In fact I think it got started yesterday. Fortunately that was the day I took a tour along Lakeshore and up through Parkdale and Liberty Village as opposed to making an ass of myself with my abortive run up the Avenue Road hill. (To my credit though, I didn't give up... I just ran out of gears and had to walk a few metres before I was back in the saddle).

Looking forward to the Critical Mass ride tonight... should be a good time. If the weather doesn't suck too badly.

Depending on how I feel after that, I may end up at Darby's... promises to be a good time, $10 for beer and bands? I'm in!

I confess that I have always liked that quote from Snake on the Simpsons and have been dying for a reason to use it.
Now I have several. I have gone beta happy this week.
My notebook is running the newest Windows Live Messenger Beta, which is fun.
I'm also running (as of yesterday afternoon) Beta 2 of Office 2007 and that is really cool. The UI changes alone are worth the price of admission (metaphorically speaking, it is a free public beta after all). As soon as my downloader starts behaving again I'm going to pull down the installers for Visio, Project, OneNote and Groove.

That isn't the coolest beta I've gotten into lately though... A few weeks back, I threw my hat in the ring to test Google-hosted mail. Imagine my surprise when I was issued an invite.
I changed my MX records, and have been accessing my mail via the hosted Gmail interface since yesterday.
I have to say... It's nice.
My previous host was not too keen on spam filtering. The filtering I am getting with the hosted GMail is damn near perfect.
The solution also allows for Google-chat based IM for all users within your domain. That's a nice bonus, especially since any Jabber client can be used to access it from outside of the browser.
I'll going to be blogging more about these betas on and off over the next little while, so stay tuned for some bleeding edge geek commentary.

Creative and Apple are having a legal brawl over patent infringement.
Interesting to note that Creative (estimated by ZDNet to have an 11% share of the MP3 player market) struck first, accusing Apple of infringing on a key patent. Apple (with an estimated market share of 77%) struck back accusing Creative of infringing on four patents.

Is this the new competition? Stifling the more successful competitor with lawsuits over vague patents, that perhaps never should have been granted?

Apparently actually bringing something to market just isn't cool anymore. Squatting on IP that you don't actually do anything with and using the legal system to snipe away at your rivals seems to be the order of the day.

You know, maybe I am wrong about this... maybe these are just the bastard cousins of NTP v. RIM, and the real blame lies on the crop oif biz-school grads who came out of the dotcom days, eyes wild with possibility and built-to-flip business plans tucked under their arms.
Yes... the more I think of it, the more this sounds like a throwback to those days.

And that is a foul thought, to be back in that landrush mentality.

Apparently, the US Gov't has banned the use of Lenovo hardware (that's the China-based company that now produces all the IBM PC brands, including the ThinkPads) from all classified networks.

I'm not sure if this is nationalism, paranoia or pressure tactics from "domestic" manufacturers. I place domestic in quotes as many (if not the majority) core chipsets are not fabricated in North America... even when the core chipsets are made on the continent, many other crtitical subcomponents (networking, for example) are not.

This announcement clearly indicates that the US government has been using hardware rife with offshore silicon for years. So why get all paranoid or nationalistic now?

Being from Toronto, I'm not used to shows starting on time. Apparently this one at le Spectrum did.
Completely missed the opening act, Torche, which was a mild disappointment as I had heard good things about their stoner rockiness.

Mogwai kicked ass. Glasgow Mega Snake was the last song of the set before they came back for a two song encore. Even standing at the back of the venue, my ears were ringing.

All right... There are a number of things I have come to truly look forward to about my sporadic trips to Ottawa over the last decade.

Last night, I discovered a new one - the Dominion Tavern, AKA the Dom.

This is the Bovine sans bullshit attitude from a notable minority of patrons (don't get me wrong, I love the BSC). All punk, zero fucking pretense. This *is* what a rock and roll tavern fucking well should be.

I freely admit to being drunk as hell on my initial visit here last night, but that didn't make the generally convivial "live and let live, or just go fuck yourself if that's how you're going to be" atmosphere any less welcoming or enjoyable.

The aesthetics of the establishment are definitely old school tavern - and you know I'm all about the old school - faded wood paneling, off-white paint on the walls, quarts of Blue and 50 (cinquante motherfuckers!) avaialable at reasonable rates from the bar fridge.

The partially covered back patio offers several weathered picnic tables (some of which sit beneath a shelter of corrugated plastic), as well as ample bike storage.

I could go on at length, but my quart may be getting warm, so I'm going to sum up as follows: those who don't like the Dom "suck cock by choice". And I'm talking about farm animals you tasteless bastards...

Serves 3. Recommended sides include rice, morrocan salad.

1 frozen cod fillet cut into 3 equal pieces
Chinese 5 Spice blend with Tea
Garlic
1/2 cube of seafood bouillion
3/4 cup of rice
6 frozen shrimp (18-20 count)
1/2 - 1 tsp Paprika (depending on taste)
Salt
Black pepper
0.5L water
Olive oil

Grind 5 spice mixture into powder.
Rub into each side of all 3 pieces of fish.
Let sit 5-10 minutes.

Set skillet on stove on medium to medium-high heat.
Add oil to pan once skillet has warmed.
Crush/slice/dice/mash garlic.
Add garlic to oil.
Add fish to pan.
Flip fish 3 times to ensure proper, even cooking on each side.
Add shrimp to skillet, allow to begin to cook.
Add water & bouillion.
Add paprika, stir.
Add salt and black pepper to taste.
Allow fish to poach in liquid.

Allow liquid to reduce, then plate.

Figures, the week was golden. Of ourse the weekend should be crap. After all, it *is* April, and the rain's going to fall sometime.

Alright, what's the deal with the CBC... last year it was announced that they had purchased the rights to the second series of Doctor Who in addition to the Christmas Invasion. Where are these episodes? Last year, we were only a week out of step with the English on this. I really would prefer not to hear we'll be waiting for the fall...

Well, apparently it may well be in the fall. Based on what I can Google, it isn't going to be anytime soon [link may be stale]. Ah well, we're still ahead of the rest of the world outside the British Isles in this respect.

No props to the CBC for delaying the air date (or the BBC if the dealy is part of the distribution deal) - this will cause fans to grab all the episodes they can on torrents.

Update: June 20th seems to be the unofficial date for CBC to start showing series 2.

Bought a new bike yesterday... a nice, smooth-riding commuter. I look forward to getting my use out of it.

Life is good. Sun is shining bright this AM, I'm about to clean up my act and go get some groceries. After that I think I'm going to sweep up around the house, clean my room, do laundry and have an otherwise domestically focussed day.

Started writing again, real pencil to paper stuff... It's enjoyable, but damn I'm rusty. I'll have to polish the hell out of before it's fit for editorial consumption.

The Liberal Party has begun the process of fragmentation and in-fighting known as "leader selection". Harper has begun to try to rollback legislation that was already passed in a free vote in the House and is proposing to build massive prisons so we can make our society more like that of the US.

Here's a newsflash: I've been talking to some people down there, citizens, you know? People who work for a living, not politicians and blue-skying neo-conservative political theorists, people who actually vote... and they've been saying that they aren't happy with a lot of things that are going on down there... Maybe, just maybe, we should make our own decisions and not build our nation and society into a clueless fanboy's replica of the US as it exists right now.

Hmmm... I guess the kind of thinking that makes one be themselves is not very compatible with the conservative mindset. Well, fair enough, why make your own mistakes when you can re-tread someone else's tried and true ones?

Snowy Saturday Evening in Toronto

Walking down Markham Street towards Bloor this eve in heavy, gentle snowfall... Listening to "Amsterdam" by the Evil Doers... put me in mind of other places, other times and brought a smile to my face. Strangely happay and peaceful thoughts on a snowy evening in a Canada under a conservative minoroty, but certainly welcome for a number of reasons...

This winter hasn't been much of a winter around here, not after the last two years' winters (all those living in Ottawa feel free to mock us down here).

It's red, older than me and needs a french-threaded bottom bracket: my new frame.
A 70s vintage Gitane road frame, to be more precise.
Getting this built is gonna be FUN. So much so in fact, that I will be blogging the whole damned thing. I may even get some pictures of it.
I definitely need to clean the frame off with a degreaser... there's years of grime and oil deposits on the metal... and I'm not sure about the forks... the action is a little stiff when I attempt to steer, hopefully it's just a bearing needing to be repacked or something similar going on there. If not, new forks for me.

This ride will be downright sick when I have finished with it. It may even be dope (as the kids have long ago stopped saying).

Figures... as soon as I get some time off, the weather turns to this wet, damp crap, unseasonably warm and all.
Not what I want to see in December. I have never liked having a green Christmas. When I was a kid, I found green Christmases really disillusioning.
Now I find them annoying.

Off for a few days... did the Boxing Day shopping, got out of the Yonge and Dundas area about an hour before someone got shot... lovely... enough is enough is enough. i'll rant about htis later.... or maybe not at all. Many people more eloquent than I have weighed in on this.

Learning to drive... again (sort of)

Yeah... picked up my new car from the dealer yesterday. First time I have driven a stick shift in well over 10 years - and I'll level with you: I was never that well-practiced at it before.
After a humiliating start (yes I was that jackass on Plains Road in the middle of Saturday afternoon), everything slowly began to pull together.

Drove my mother to drop a package off in Oakville. Mistake - my mother has rarely been comfortable with my drving in an automatic - the experience of riding with a novice stick shift jockey did nothing to calm her nerves.

Drove back to Toronto on the Lakeshore, made it without incident, though I gave the RIDE program out on Lorne Park something to laugh at.

At the end of the road, Iw as manoeuvering into a praking spot, doing the olde reverse-forward-reverse-forward... yeah I stalled out about a half dozen times.
That was embarassing. Then I got lazy and just snagged a spot further down the road.

Ugh... I have a minor cold won't go away, and yesterday the effect was post-nasal drip which was/is driving me batshit.
So, before I fell into the coma, I had some cough syrup to help get that away.
When I got up, I reached for the non-drowsy decongestant pills to keep the sinuses clear.
Well it looks like there's some interaction happening, 'cause I'm on a chemically-fuelled roller-coaster between lucidity and torpor... I can type for a few moments at a time and then it all gets bad...

...Yeah, or I daze out and find myself half-asleep absorbing all the office gossip around me. And I hate that. Like most people I have my own shit to worry about, I don't need to hear (especially involuntarily) other people's issues.

Moses... I think I was asleep with my eyes open for a few moments there.

OK, back to work... hopefully I won't drool on the keyboard.

I have a headache the size up Gibraltar. But my sinuses are clear for the first time in a couple of weeks, and I am not sore all over anymore.
A nice change.

Well, I rebuilt the wireless network yesterday. Adios, ovislink hub... you were loud, fickle and I never liked you anyway. As for the combo router-802.11b WAP... you had to yield to G hardware.

Yeah... it's good, quiet, reliable wireless... with a decent (well for consumer wireless) security mechanism. And I can finally get a reliable signal in the kitchen while I'm making brekky.

In a few short weeks, I will have been in the punk rock IT biz (at one level or another) for ten years.
Wow.
Ten years man! Ten years!

I remember when a 1 GB hard disk was something special. I remember the web dev station we installed at the coop at Laurier; Pentium MMX 200 MHz. It was a screaming fast box for the time, with 128 MB of RAM making Windows NT4 SP3 supa-dupa responsive.

I think most modern BlackBerry handhelds have faster processors. I'm positive most PalmOne devices do.

I now carry 1 GB of solid state memory around with me in a form factor so small I constantly fear losing it. Did I say one? I meant two... I forgot about the iPod shuffle I am currently listening to.

Upcoming gaming consoles (*cough* PS3 *cough*) will support dual layer blu-ray optical media, with a capacity of up to 50 GB per disc.
So much, so fast... it doesn't bug me unless I look back on it.

Here's my bit of "grumpy old man" after ten years: the current media hoopla over converged devices (which has been going on for years, but seems to be picking up speed again of late).
Seven years ago a group of 6 3rd and 4th year business students at Laurier sat down around a pitcher in Wilf's pub to figure out what their research project would be for their MIS class.
A small faction of us pitched convergence. We were shot down as it was a "pie in the sky" idea.

Hah.

Yeah, listen: I get my email (work and personal) delivered to my phone handset, my work email comes in on an encrypted connection. I can check my outstanding tickets on this handset as well, over a 3DES encrypted wireless connection back into the office network.
Oh yeah... it's a phone too.
I haven't needed to power on a laptop to communicate with the office when I am away or off site in years. I know guys in UNIX shops who run SSH clients off of their handhelds when they have to quickly make an adjustment to a server, or verify that a process is still running.

So yeah... the past decade of geek life has seen concepts that were once dismissed as "nice, but..." become daily reality.

I am not sure what the next step is, though Robert X. Cringley has something to say about that (eh, I can't find the link).

All I know is that consulting life beats the hell out of the helpdesk.

Well, we had a few moments of serious flurry here in the TDot.
To think it was 17 degrees just two weeks back (that's celcius; for you metric-impaired types that's ~66 Fahrenheit).
And now sun... after the last two days of clouds, wind and rain I for one welcome the sight.

OK, Fable: the Lost Chapters... Huge props, this is a great re-release, finished what was the core plot of the original XBox release last night and to my surprise... there's more. A lot more based on appearances.
Puzzles that are actually challenging.
Opponents that I won't necessarily be able to chop through like a hot knife through butter.
More missions.
Cool plot.

Well, my bike got stolen a while back. To any bike thieves reading: you are all fucking bastards.

Let me tell you how I really feel.

My next bike will have a security system with an electroshock component. Not powerful enough to cause any lasting physical harm, but just enough so you shitheel thieves will lose control of your bowels when attempting to steal bicycles.

So, I am planning to get a new ride built. Here's the skinny on the new bike project:
I have a late 70s Gitane frame - I need to take this to Bicycle Specialties for a new French threaded lower bracket and a crank, likely a TA crank.
As for the rest of the gear, I have but one word: Campagnolo. Vintage if I can find it.
I'll need at least 2 locks to keep this safe in this town, but hell, I'll probably never need to buy another bike.

This is going to be fun...

Dungen at Lee's Palace on October 11 2005 review

Wow. That was a fun show... even with the majority of the lyrics being in Swedish.
And no, the lead singer's stage poise was not in the least bit influenced by Robert Plant. Not all. Not more than 85% anyway.

If Dungen is coming to a venue near you, and you have a penchant for vaguely poppy, at times psych rock... then you don't want to see them. You need to.

Ted Leo + Pharmacists at the Mod Club September 29

Damn...

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are excellent live. Right from the get-go they rocked out, opening the set with "Little Dawn" at about 40 bpm faster than the album cut.
The rock didn't stop. The slowest anything was played was album speed, but that didn't happen that often.
I don't think I have ever seen such flawless timing on stage in my life - this band plays really tight and they were all doing their own sound on the fly.
Personal favourite moments from the show: "Where have all the Rude Boys gone?" and "Ballad of the Sin Eater".
These are some of the "hardest working dudes in show business" (thanks Acker). Check them out if at all possible.

Black Mountain et al. Lee's Palace October 1 2005

Three bands from Vancouver... and thanks to some thieves in New York, only one set of instruments.

First up: Ladyhawk. Rocking guitar and drums in a Neil Young-esque alt-country style.
Overall impression: very enjoyable, they do what they do well. I'd see them again.

Second up: Blood Meridian (using Ladyhawk's gear).
Overall impression: while I had heard some buzz about this band, and I did enjoy them I would rank them slightly behind Ladyhawk in terms of what I enjoyed more. Check them out, because they rock.

The headliner: Black Mountain (again using Ladyhawk's gear).
Overall impression: damn... Their first Toronto show back in late March/early April was good. This time, just off a tour with Coldplay (hey, more power to them) and on the road with some fellow musicians from Vancouver it was incredible.
They have their live act down. It was so good as to be ridiculous. The last encore featured every member from every band on the bill grabbing whatever instrument they could get their hands on, grabbing any piece of spare stage real estate - to the extent that the drummer from Ladyhawk had a couple of drums in front of him as he sat on the steps at stage left. I really can't say enough good shit about Black Mountain right now, so I'll cut myself off. See them when you can.

Lunch on the fly 20051012

Cod
Cooked rice
Misc fish/seafood
Seafood stock (or water and stock mix)
Vinho d'alho
Olive oil
Salt
Balck pepper
Basil
Oregano
Bay leaf

Preheat a skillet on medium-high heat and add oil.
Once oil has become heated add cod to skillet.
Add vinho d'alho to taste.
Cook fish on one side and flip.
About halfway through cooking the second side add stock or water and appropriate measure of stock mix. Stir.
Add basil, oregano and bay leaf.
Add pepper and salt to taste.
Allow to come to gentle boil.
Add rice.
Add any additional fish or seafood.
Add additional stock as required.
Allow stock to slowly reduce, the goal is to infuse the rice with the flavours of the other ingredients while poaching the cod and any other fish in the mix.

Once stock mixture has almost completely reduced and fish is poached serve in a bowl.

Disfrutad.

In my case, it is the same colour as my bike frame, right down to the flecks of rust it has picked up in service as an all-season commuter in Toronto.

Oh yeah, it's back... and it rides like a freakin' dream!

I had the crank replaced (which was due after the beating it took one Friday night in Burlington last winter... damned sand and gravel) and the new crank is a much better match with the shifter. It's a new bike.

I am so cheerful right now that not even my bruised ass can bring me down.

Readers of the Register do, and not very fondly.
With reason. The Palm family of devices (especially the Handsrping Visor) were at one point the handheld device of choice.
I had one in those halcyon days... A Handspring Visor: sleek, nice screen size and expandable.
At the time I was wearing a lot of hats working in an industrial shop. One of my roles was that of the "management" rep on the Joint Health and Safety Committee. The Visor made publishing the weekly reports on the state of the floor a breeze; write (not type) the damn thing on the handheld, pull it into word when I got back to my desk and email the bugger off.
I cannot even begin to tell you how much I sneered down my nose at PokcetPC/WindowsCE/Windows Mobile/whatever the hell it's called this week users. Their battery life was shite.
Their colour displays were cluttered with a UI ripped from a desktop OS designed for a 17" monitor.
Their hardware crashed often where I had to work to crash mine.

But it all came crashing down. The reasons don't matter at this point, only the result.

They had the handheld market by the proverbial short and curlies and did jack about it.

To paraphrase the movie adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting: What I am trying to say is that the Treo is a blip on the radar, a high point on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.

And as far as gadget quality goes, I think its a damned shame.

Floating hub blues

A short while ago, I noticed that something bad was going on with the bike... the ride felt seriously unstable and when I looked down, I could see the rear wheel wobbling left to right.
Bugger, I said.
Took it to the shop yesterday to get someone to check it out. I was expecting one of two diagnoses:

Loose wheel; or
Warped rim

Had it been the second I would have been pissed, as the wheel in question is less than 4 months old.
Fortunately it was neither. What it was was a loose hub. Which explains the travel. And the fact that the tire and tube were both shredded to ribbons (yes, I was riding with an underinflated tire and yes, for that I deserve what I get but shit man... a loose hub on a new wheel? Whaddafuck...) by the moving rim.

Ah well. Tuesday I'll be back on the bike and I cannot wait...

With my luck I'll get packed off for 4 weeks in Sudbury come Tuesday.

FreeBSD, beer and possessed hardware

Warning: the following is rife with geekiness and profanity. So just fucking deal with it.

All right... So my flatmate's computer is fucking possessed. I have no other words to describe this.
It all started about 3 weeks ago when Windows Me (that being the most modern Windows operating system his accursed machine would run) up and decides out of the blue to stop recognising the wireless NIC that was installed.
So he reinstalls it, reboots... and discovers that Windows has removed TCP/IP entirely. What's that mean? No networking. None. The machine has decided to become a hermit and forswear the company of it's own kind by isolating itself.

After much ado, and fairly gratuitous use of the word "fuck", he gave up on Windows Me, and asked me if I had any ideas. So I gave him the install CDs for FreeBSD 5.4...

...and it was good. The OS is fairly solid (this is a direct descendant of BSD UNIX... as is Solaris, AIX... this is real UNIX, not some userland lashed to a kernel with duct tape... that's right, I said it you Penguin-minded dogmatists... accept it, that's your development model), the KDE GUI is easy on the eyes and surprisingly modern... expect the fucking drivers for the wireless card won't load... the damn thing cannot seem to get an IRQ.

I should back up and mention the hardware. This is an old school Pentium II 266 MHz machine. How old school? EDO RAM. I shit thee not. But it runs the newest RELEASE of FreeBSD and does so well, so who cares?

At any rate, there was further gratuitous use of the word "fuck" on this revelation. So, we did what was necessary. Grabbing 3 cold beers each, we built and installed a customised kernel for the hardware in question.

And then there was yet further gratuitous use of the word "fuck", this time employed with "motherfucker", "rat-bastard" and "ill-tempered son of a bitch".

Well, the upshot is dude has a working machine with absolutely no networking... so I borrowed a crimper from work, made sure the box of bulk Category 5e cable still has enough on the spool (thanks for the gift Jer...) and I'll be grabbing some cable ends on the way home.

If I can't make the sonofabitch network the plan is to overclock it to death. This should be fun.

Ay ay ay...
The week didn't suck. Seriously. It was just long and injected with uncertainty, though heard some good news today at the office.

Well, I stood up in front of a number of my fellow geeks and yapped for 10-15 minutes about the Shmoo Group's Defcon talk, specifically developments in Rainbow Tables and Exploits for Exploits. Apparently a few people were paying attention and found it interesting... I was given props when I went out for a smoke during intermission and that's always cool.
Hell, it was just nice to know that my part of the presentation was not teh suck.

In a few short hours I shall be the proud owner of a new Mac Mini. I cannot wait. Bring me the pretty UNIX, yes... let the fun begin.

OK, so I haven't posted for a while.
The truth is I burned out in Vegas... Defcon was (in the case of some presentations) pretty damn good. Lots o' neat stuff out there. I left with an expanded mind. Seriously.

It was the non-Defcon activities of the 4 days in Las Vegas... beer went down far too easily the whole time, and I had cause to curse myself almost every morning upon waking.
